Careers and Work Experience

Print
PDF

Work Experience forms relevant to this time of year can be found in the Downloads section, together with the letter I sent out to parents in May.

I would like to receive all Year 10 students’ Consent/medical check forms before the end of this school year, please.  They were blue in the packs that should have arrived home via “bag of son”.

Thank you to all who have handed these in so far.

If you arrange a placement at any time, please let the School have all details using the “Own Placement” form (green in the packs).

The risk assessment form will be pasted on to the site next term.

Careers Advice Information and Guidance

We are fortunate at Lawrence Sheriff School to have Alan Johnson, an experienced and knowledgeable Connexions Personal Adviser, on site for part of the week.  Whilst concentrating on Year 11 and sixth form interviews, he is happy to help any student with careers-based enquiries.  Mrs James in the Sixth Form Centre and Mrs Kisby (for younger students) will liaise with Mr Johnson to arrange a careers interview on request.

Careers resources are currently on display in the new Library, organised efficiently for us by Mrs Judd.  Some of them can be booked out and all students are encouraged to browse through these informative publications.  Kudos – a careers guidance programme – is installed on the computer network to assist with career and work experience planning.

Programme of Study and Off-timetable Events

Work on Careers, Work-Related Learning, Enterprise and Financial Capability takes place throughout most of the school year within one of the three weekly Form Tutorials.  More focused coverage is possible through events and presentations for which the timetable is suspended for a particular year group.  In addition, there are visits to companies (small groups of students) and careers fairs together with talks, visits and challenges across the curriculum.

The following progression is typical although there are slight changes every year:
Year 7·     Personal finance and business lessons in Citizenship (summer term, to include: learning about banks and the services offered, how to run and monitor an account, organising the launch of an enterprise, etc).
Year 8·     Careers and business day led by the local Education Business Partnership (EBP – spring term).
Year 9·     Careers morning delivered by the EBP and visiting local business volunteers (summer term),·     Presentation by the Engineering Construction Training Industry Board (ecitb) on careers in engineering in the construction industry,·     Presentations by Armed Forces visitors as available/
Year 10·     Attendance at the Skills West Midlands Careers Fair (spring term),·     Year 10 Enterprise Conference (summer term),·     The start of Work Experience preparation (See the Work Experience Policy under the Policies tab)
Year 11·     Practice Interviews with volunteers from various workplace backgrounds (autumn term).  New volunteers always welcome!·     Continuation of Work Experience Preparation to include a Health and Safety seminar (autumn term),·     One week’s Work Experience placement (spring term).
Year 12 Year 13·     Please refer to Sixth Form pages.

Each student has a Lawrence Sheriff School Personal Development folder.  This is stored in his form room and is used to build up a collection of resources and evidence from work carried out in the Tutorial Programme, culminating in the production of an up to date “cv” to assist with applications for a Work Experience placement, a place in the Sixth Form or other establishment and, ultimately, the personal statement for university applications or employment.
