Ski trip to Austria 2017

Ski Trip 2017
Strass im Zillertal, Austria

By Adam Fry

In 2017, the Lawrence Sheriff Ski Trip returned to the Zillertal Valley, 2016’s location

We departed Lawrence Sheriff on Thursday 16th February, arriving in Austria the next day. Upon arrival, we hired boots, skis and poles from Sport Rainer in Uderns and settled into our rooms at Cafe Zillertal - our hotel in Strass - before being arranged into our Ski Groups for the week and taking part in a quiz organised by the teachers (won by my room).

Saturday was the first day of skiing ever for many and the first after long breaks for more advanced skiers. We headed to the nearby resort of Kaltenbach, where we skied last year, and enjoyed a successful first day of skiing, albeit with poor visibility in the morning. In the evening, we watched Quantum of Solace in the hotel restaurant.

On Sunday, we headed to Zell am Ziller where the weather was beautiful all day. Development in the beginner groups was rapid, with those who were unable to put skis on the day before now well on their way towards learning the first key technique of skiing: the snow plow. In the evening, we returned to Erlebnistherme Zillertal in Fügen where we enjoyed the excellent facilities.

On Monday, we travelled to Finkenberg, a long journey to a resort close to the end of the valley and close to the Hintertux Glacier. The weather was mixed, with sun for periods and fog and poor visibility in others. Luckily, the sun was shining at lunchtime. Good snow conditions and a great mix of runs of varying difficulty made this a popular resort with attendees. In the evening, we went on a small excursion to Mayrhofen, the largest town in the valley where we were able to stock up on food and purchase souvenirs. Following this, we had the annual Ski Astons quiz - hosted by the instructors - which combined multiple written and practical rounds. Despite winning the teachers’ quiz on the first night, my room managed a miserable 10th place out of 10 rooms on the night.

On Tuesday, we went back to Finkenberg and the weather was foggy for most of the day. Despite this, the day was enjoyable for most of the groups. At this stage, the less experienced skiers were beginning to progress from the nursery slopes to the public pistes, and more experienced skiers were applying new techniques learnt throughout the week into their skiing. In the evening, we returned for the Tyrolean Evening which was a thoroughly enjoyable experience due to the increased involvement of the students in comparison to previous years and the participation of teachers - a new addition to the night from previous years.

Wednesday saw a return to Kaltenbach, and in beautiful conditions the skiers who at the start of the week barely advanced off one slope in the resort were now getting a more wholesome experience of Kaltenbach, beginning to ski on blue and easier red runs. In the evening, we took part in traditional Austrian bowling and were presented with our awards for the week of skiing.

Our last day of skiing took part in Kaltenbach again and was a day to showcase the new skills developed during the week. In the evening we prepared for departure. We arrived back at Lawrence Sheriff School on Friday 24th February.

As this is personally my last opportunity to go on the trip, I would like to conclude by thanking the four teachers who attended the trip the same years I did - Dr Cerri, Mr Rawbone, Mrs Halestrap and Mr Clements - for their effort in organising and staging the trip. Additionally, I would like to thank Ski Astons and all the instructors who have been excellent in developing me personally as a skier and many others. I look forward to reading the respective review for next year’s trip.
